Xcopy File Path Limit
I'm copying files from a HDD that was on a windows PC to a NAS device. However I am running into a problem. A Large number of these files won't copy because their filename length is too long. The files currently exist on an NTFS formatted hard drive, and the NAS' file system is EXT4.
I've already tried changing the file system on the NAS, but EXT4 is my only option there. So what I am looking to do is shorten the file names, however I am having a hard time finding an automated method of doing this and was hoping for some input and/o suggestions. Any help would be appreciated. Robocopy works, but if you're partially through the copy when you found the issue it could make things confusing. It's important to fully understand what the problem is, which specifically is that the full path name is too large for Windows Explorer (and some other things) to be happy with. Now, it's not actually too long for the file system it's just that Windows Explorer has tighter constraints. My method of dealing with it is to temporarily rename the higher level directories on the destination and try copying the files below it over again.
Then when they're all there name the directories back and all will be as it was. Just make sure you remember what directories were renamed (not that hard) and what they need to be (I usually still have the old directories around so I can just cut and paste).
It can be a few minutes of annoyance, but it's usually not too many directories, so it's usually not that bad. TanK203 wrote: Running robocopy to see if that works.
